Queer counselling services
People access counselling at drummond street for a range of reasons. Some might be specific to being Queer, like
- gender/sexual identity,
- sustaining relationships
- coming out
- homophobia
Or they may be more general issues like
- relationship communication & interaction
- different belief systems & traditions in a relationship
- intimacy & infidelity
- arguments and tension
- complex issues such as sexual abuse, mental health, problematic drug & alcohol use, gambling
- parenting & social roles
- intimate partner violence
- work, life, family balance
While all these issues are familiar terrain to all of our counsellors, if you feel it would be easier for you, you are able to request a Queer counsellor. We can work with you individually, in a couple or as part of a facilitated group.
We are committed to maintaining your privacy and operate from within a code of ethical practice. Health Care Card holders are seen at no charge and for others there is a sliding scale based on income.
“It really helped to know that our counsellor was gay. We knew that he wasn’t going to ignore the effect of homophobia on us as a couple, that he knew what we were talking about”
“We went to a few family sessions and that was great, then we did a parenting plan which took three sessions, we really had to talk it through – and that was good too – its nice to have an option rather than just doing it yourself and hoping it works out”
“There was no judgement from my counsellor, I really felt like she was on my side, and she helped me work out ways to deal with my stress”
